Through
years of evaluation and treatment of patients with taste and smell dysfunction
at the Taste and Smell Clinic, specific
methods and techniques have proven useful in caring for patients with these
symptoms.
Because of this success,
our methods and techniques were reduced to practice and resulted in the
development of specific products for use by both patients and physicians.
A few of these products are described below.
AccuSens
Taste Kit- This is a self-contained taste-testing kit for use
by physicians and other health professionals interested in measuring human
taste function. It contains testing materials, forms for recording results,
and full instructions for its use. This kit is available through the auspices
of a major drug company, and has been nationally advertised in major medical
journals. It has been used successfully in physician offices, schools,
and in sensory function laboratories for over 35 years.
AccuSens Sinus Kit- This is a simple
self-contained kit for use by patients and physicians (1) to assist in
stimulating nasal mucus secretion, (2) to facilitate clearance of excess
mucus and debris from the nasal passageways, and (3) to relieve symptoms
associated with nasal allergies. Use of this kit has proven successful
in improving nasal breathing, relieving nocturnal snoring, and reducing
nocturnal mouth breathing. Included in this kit are materials for use
in easing nasal breathing, equipment to perform clearing of the nasal
passageways, and a set of written instructions. The kit has been used
successfully by patients at the Taste and Smell
Clinic for such disorders as allergic rhinitis, acute and chronic
sinusitis, and other types of upper airway disease for over 20 years.
AccuSens Saliva Kit- This is a simple
self-contained kit designed for use by physicians and other health professionals
in the collection of human saliva. The kit contains materials for collecting
parotid saliva and instructions for its use. The AccuSens Saliva Kit facilitates
the diagnosis of patients with various clinical problems related to salivary
secretion. These clinical problems may include, but are not limited to
Sjogren's syndrome, impairment of salivary secretion following x-irradiation
or neutron radiation to the head and/or neck, and salivary dysfunction
after I131 treatment for thyroid cancer. It has been used successfully
at the Taste and Smell Clinic for
over 35 years.
